Tools & supplies students should bring to class:

Rotary power carver – either micro motor or flex-shaft

My personal preference, for what I do, is a micro motor. If you have a flex-shaft and are planning to bring that, please check your maximum rpms. Some of the older ones max at 18, 000 rpms. This will cause some problems. The majority of my carving is done in the 25,000 – 35,000 rpm range. Also, if you bring a flex-shaft I would recommend bringing a portable tool stand. Be sure to have a 3/32” collet for your carver.

Variety of carving burrs – Bring what you have, plus Basic recommendations from MDI Woodcarvers Supply

stump cutter #20-B5 $6.75 ea.

mini stump cutters # 21-SET36 $4.95 and # 21-SET39 $4.95

Diamond cutter set #17-20SET $9.50

Typhoon bur # 37- 3F1Y $12.95 Or

Kutzalls bur #12-3F1 $12.00

Bring turned vessel or bowl that is dried and ready to carve. Be sure turned pieces have at least ¼” or more wall thickness for relief carving. The thicker the piece the more relief you can carve. If you don’t have that, you can bring a practice disc about 6”-8” in diameter (cherry or maple would be good choices). Turn a dome shape so you can practice working on a curved surface.

1” thick by about 6”-8” diameter dome shape disc

Bring safety glasses, dust mask and ear plugs. If you need magnifiers for detail work, don’t forget to bring those.

If anyone is interested in getting a micro motor, a few I would direct people to look at, that won't break the bank, are the Mastercarver Micro-Pro #793700 www.woodcarverssupply.com or the Escort III 45 Marathon #85-ES45 www.mdiwoodcarvers.com .
