Chesapeake Woodturners

15 June 2024 Meeting

Chesapeake Woodturners & Friends,

This month's meeting will be held at Maryland Hall on Saturday, June 15, from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm in room 119.

Our usual business meeting will be followed by “Show & Tell” and “The LatheEngraver” a demonstration by Paul Paukstelis. Paul has been turning since 2020 and is a member of the Montgomery County Woodturners. He’s also a professor of biochemistry at the University of Maryland with a life-long passion for problem solving. As a relatively early adopter of consumer 3D printing technology, he uses printed parts extensively around and on the lathe.

His LatheEngraver will bolt onto almost any lathe to provide computer control of the spindle and an embellishing tool, effectively converting the lathe into a CNC machine. The machine’s design allows the entire exterior of a bowl to be embellished, opening up endless design  possibilities. Its capabilities allow it to substitute for many existing tools including inlay router templates/jigs, pyrography tools, and can be a functional equivalent of a Rose Engine lathe. Paul’s demonstration will show the entire process, from seeing up the machine, making simple pockets for inlays, creating a continuous pattern for rim embellishment, and generating a simple ornamental turning pattern. Here’s a link to a collection of Paul’s photos related to his LatheEngraver development project:

Also, don’t forget to wear your CW name tag if you’re coming in person. If you don’t have a CW name tag, please order one from Lou Prugh, our official name tag maker.
