Chesapeake Woodturners
January 2023 Meeting
The club’s next meeting will be on Saturday, January 21, from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. As reported at our December meeting, we will no longer be able to use room 307 at Maryland Hall. It is being converted to a dedicated video production classroom. We are working with Maryland Hall to identify another space where our club can hold “in person” meetings. Until we do, we will meet via Zoom. Additional information, including the Zoom link, will be provided by January 14.
Our usual business meeting will be followed by “Show & Tell” and a remote demonstration by Elizabeth Weber, “Adding Textures and Carving to Turned Pieces”.
This demonstration will be a great starting point for learning more about embellishing your turned surfaces. Elizabeth will explain her approach to adding specific embellishments by discussing:
Finding inspiration for your work
How to make story boards
Different holding methods
Adding textures to your bowl or vessel
Tools (see the attached Resource List)
How to use your tools to achieve the desired carved surface
Methods of adding color, like dry brushing
A Resource list can be found below
Elizabeth is a Tennessee native now living in Seattle, WA. She looks for ways to add vibrancy and movement to the things she creates through the use of color and shapes. Much of her work tries to capture past influences and tell a story. The storytelling not only lives in the finished product, but also the turning process. Elizabeth has been a woodturning instructor at the Pratt Fine Arts Center in Seattle, WA since November 2019. She has had her work shown in galleries across the country.
Elizabeth recently learned she has been selected for the American Association of Woodturners’ 2023 Professional Outreach Program (POP) Artist Showcase* at the symposium in Louisville.
